Queens Hall meeting

The Queen’s Hall Methodist Mission one of Wigan's most loved and iconic buildings is in need of needed repair and restoration.
The dome is impregnated with buddleia bushes and roots making it unsafe and allowing water to seep into the upper floors.
The inaccessible gutterings are blocked and an event is planned for Thursday 18th January at 3:30.
Many organisations have been invited including the Leader of the Council.
Hope that WW folk can come along to this none religious event and help to put pressure on to preserve this valued asset.

Don't invite the council they will want to close it down and after being derelict for a few years will demolish it

Correct PeterP ...don't let the Clowncil anywhere near it....their Big Top decisions have proven to be a total disgrace...The owners should be made to make the building safe ..is it not listed ?

No, it's a Methodist Church.

I took this in February 2022, just under two years ago, from The Galleries rooftop car park.

You can just see the Buddleia starting to sprout.

If you save the any of the pictures to your computer, you can blow the pictures up and examine the roof in detail, because I uploaded high resolution photographs

It would be sad if this historically important building falls into disrepair. Is it a listed building? If not then I suggest some of us could get together to apply fir listed status, thus giving it protection. I remember playing in the school band there in the 60s. The building is one of a handful of historic town centre structures still standing.

It's grade 2 listed.

I think a few of us should look into contacting historic England to make aware our concerns. Is there a friends group? If so then there is potential to apply for lottery funding. If not then a friends group should be established.

'Listing' may be part of the problem: it imposes onerous requirements concerning any maintenance or restoration work, causing their costs to escalate dramatically.

Total disgrace…they should have a trip to Edinburgh to see how historical buildings are preserved…sometimes I wonder if the people of Wigan are bothered…as long as there’s somewhere to smoke
